LED Face Masks: What to Look For Before You Buy
LED face masks have become one of the most visible categories in at-home beauty technology. But choosing one is not simply a matter of finding a mask with the most lights or the longest list of wavelengths.

What is an LED face mask?
An LED face mask uses light-emitting diodes to deliver specific wavelengths of light to the skin.
Different wavelengths are associated with different applications. Red and near-infrared light are commonly used in anti-aging-focused devices, while blue light is often included in devices designed around blemish-prone skin.
The important thing is that the wavelength is only one part of the equation.
The device's design, treatment time, light output, coverage and instructions also matter.
Which wavelengths should you look for?
There is no single wavelength that makes an LED mask automatically better.
Instead, look at which wavelengths the device actually uses and what they are intended to do.
Red light
Red light is commonly associated with skincare routines focused on the appearance of aging and skin texture.
For example, FOREO's FAQ 202 uses red light at 650 nm.
Near-infrared light
Near-infrared, or NIR, sits beyond visible red light.
FAQ 202 includes NIR at 850 nm as part of its eight-wavelength system.
If you are primarily interested in anti-aging-focused LED treatment, red and near-infrared wavelengths are therefore worth paying attention to.
Blue light
Blue light is commonly included in LED devices aimed at blemish-prone skin.
The exact wavelength can vary between devices, so check the manufacturer's specifications rather than assuming that all blue LED masks are identical.
More wavelengths don't automatically mean a better mask
This is an important distinction.
A mask with eight wavelengths is not necessarily better than a mask with two.
Additional wavelengths may make a device more versatile, but only if those additional settings are relevant to what you actually want from the treatment.

If your primary goal is a simple red-light routine, you may not need every available color.
Look at the treatment coverage
How closely the mask sits against your face can affect the treatment experience.

If you are likely to use an LED mask while getting ready, reading or doing other things, this can make a practical difference.
What about comfort?

- whether the material feels comfortable
- how easy it is to clean
A technically impressive mask that feels uncomfortable may end up sitting in a drawer.
Do you need an app?
Not necessarily.
Some LED masks have connected apps with preset treatment programs, while others are designed to work with a simple button or controller.
An app can be useful if you want guided treatments or additional control over settings.
But it should not be the main reason you choose a mask.
The actual LED technology and the treatment routine are more important.
What should you avoid?
Be cautious about buying a mask simply because it has impressive-sounding marketing.
Look for clear information about:
- the wavelengths used
- recommended treatment time
- treatment frequency
- face coverage
- safety instructions
- whether eye protection is required
- cleaning and maintenance
If a manufacturer does not clearly explain how its device should be used, that is worth considering before you buy.
Is an expensive LED mask automatically better?
No.
Price can reflect design, materials, technology, app integration and other features, but a higher price does not automatically mean that the device is better suited to your needs.
A simpler mask may be the better choice if it provides the wavelength and treatment format you actually want.
Think about the features you will use rather than the features that look impressive on a product page.
